Sawanobori (literally ‘shower climbing’) is a big deal in Japan. Its reverse canyoning, where you go upstream, and some take it to very high technical difficulties. One highly motivated and skilled team is Jasmine Li (Taiwan) and Ryoji Onoshi, (Japan). These two came to attempt to ascent Gloomy Gorge after news of it hit the world canyoning scene…
They didn’t get up Gloomy, but they did go up Robinson, Wilson, Makarora and Cameron…
Jasmine said Cameron Creek wasn’t really a ‘canyoning’ river (more blocky and high flow than many would prefer) but did report a 12m and 50m high drop, with some difficult swimming sections. Enjoy the video by Ryoji, photos by Jasmine.
