Camping overnight on the Mangatainoka flats near the Putara road end, Dave Allen and myself completed a done in a day round trip, 11hrs 46min all up. All tree anchors were found to be solid and we cut out some tat and replaced it with new webbing at R4 and R5. The 5&6m jumps were scouted and found to have ample depth for some fun manus. In the Ruamahunga a good jump was found about halfway down the gorge, climbing a bluff to the TR. We finished it off by visiting the hidden lake of Maori legend, Hapuakorari, on the river terrace north of Roaring Stag Hut. This route has a lot more beauty than you would imagine and lends itself to a fast and light “Canyon-packing” approach.
Completed a solo one-day descent, round trip from Putara carpark, 4am start, 15 hrs in total, Feb 2015
Trip report for Chamberlain Creek, 03 Feb 12.
