Haehaenga Stream (2nd tributary) v3a2III*

25m max drop
2hrs/7hrs ( Approach/descent)
Public access

Steep, Low flow Stream: an alternative entrance to Haehaenga Stream.

It is advised to park a shuttle car at the first bridge heading south out of town on Te Aroha-Gordon Road to avoid a long walk back to town at the end of the day!

Thanks to Callum McLean for the photos and information.

Approach 2hr15

Take the Te Aroha track for about an hour, then descend the TR tributary (the main one coming from the summit) for about 30mins. Where an unmarked tributary enters from the true left with a waterfall at the junction, climb steep scree to the true left of that umarked triburary.

Traverse through the bush until you reach the second tributary.

Descent 1hr + 5hrs

Its about 1 hour of canyoning to reach the main Haehaenga stream. In this 2nd tributary there’s a 25m, 20m, 15m pitch, all on natural anchors.

The 25m is in two tiers: scramble down (using a rope if needed) to a suitable tree anchor for the main tier.

The 15m meets the first named tributary with waterfalls running in parallel before joining.

The rest of Haehaenga stream is about 5 hours, with waterfalls up to 30m and some bolted anchors.

1st descent of Haehaenga Stream 2nd tributary 11 December 2022: Josh
Hudson and Callum McLean.
