Short, steep and sustained set of waterfalls through solid sculpted greywacke.

*GUIDEBOOK UPDATE*

The manager of the NZAC Unwin Hut recommends a better parking location: Immediately south of Unwin Hut, take the vehicle track until you reach the gravel pits. Park somewhere off the track and don’t get yourself stuck in the deep gravel!

If you take a look on the satellite map, the way to reach the recommended park is really obvious..

Nice trip, approach was very steep, canyon was very short but sustained. the views on the approach made the hill tolerable. The canyon needs at least 6 more ss bolts to replace the expedition anchors and giant steel ring.

Fun sustained canyon! Trip took longer than we expected but an awesome half day, and well deserving of its two stars.

Bolting on the first pitch isn’t obvious, and the 8mm expedition bolts appear to still be in place on the TR. We rapped all the way down to R2, skipping the downclimb. R3 is off an old steel ring, it would be best to stay on the rope when getting to this anchor, as its quite an exposed scramble in the flow.

the old weir and rusting pipes are cool, definitely adds to the short walk out.

  3. Andrew Watson says:

Myself and David Rowley descended this 19th March 2017
    All bolts in place.

top bolts require a slightly tricky mantle onto scrub ledge, we used a 50m tied to a 60m to rap the first two falls and used the rope to continue the down climb before pulling the ropes at the r2 bolts -since the large bolder is quite close to another drop.

Old weir and pipe line is interesting! Assume the old huge steel ring is anchor for R3.

The good thing was we could get to a place at the end of each rap where we could visually communicate to the person at the top.

    we took 4 hours 20min.

Thanks again for the great guide book.
